Local Dairy Farmers

Larry Baer, L&R Dairy Farm

LarryBaer

Located in Marshallville, Ohio

One of Wayne County’s larger dairy operations with almost 100 years in the business. Larry is a third-generation dairy farmer and his daughter, Robyn, is currently involved in the business and will take over when he retires. Milking more than 500 head, the farm even grows its own feed for the state-of-the-art milking facility, which includes providing relaxing waterbeds for the cows!

Virgil Gasser, Gasser Farms

VirgilGasser

Located North of Wooster, Ohio

Gasser Farms is truly a family-run dairy farm. Virgil Gasser operates the farm with the help of his four sons: Aaron, Stephen, David, and Nathan, producing 45,000 pounds of milk every day. On the Gasser Farm, a more natural approach is used with their cows. Newborn calves are penned separately, and are fed their own mother’s milk for the first 10 days. They are also one of the few farms to use calf feeders, pasteurizing any excess or substandard milk and feeding it back to the calves. This saves about $2,000 per month on feed. Calves are then placed with the regular herd after about two years.

Tom Noyes, Noyes Dairy Farm

TomNoyes

Located North of Wooster, Ohio

Noyes Dairy Farm has been in business for more than 30 years. A basic dairy farm, it uses a minimum amount of technology, with an emphasis on more natural field-section grazing. Milking about 110 head, Tom’s dairy farm is representative of the average-size milk supplier.

Mose Hershberger’s Farm

MoseHershberger

Located in Holmes County

The Hershberger farm has been a valuable local supplier. Mose is fourth-generation Amish, taking over the farm in 2004 that has been in his family for more than 100 years. Doing things traditionally, Mose and his family milked their 62 head of dairy cows by hand until 1995, when they transitioned over to more modern methods.
